ALL DAY - "FILL THE BUS" - Virtual - Spartan Students! The MSU Center for Community Engaged Learning and MSU Alumni invites you to participate in our 15th Annual “Fill the Bus” event. We strive to give local students and families an equal start to the new school year! When a student walks into the classroom with the basic supplies they need, they can focus on what really matters - learning!
Students you can donate New school supplies (ex. pack of Crayons, Pack of #2 Pencils, Pack of Markers, Notebooks, and or Folders) at the Center for Community Engaged Learning located in the Student Services Building, Suite 101. You can also make a monetary donation online through our CrowdPower fundraising page. 7 AM - 5 PM (EDT) NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (NSO) IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING – Location TBD - Official programming will occur throughout the day and includes mealtimes, breaks, transition periods, and other Fall Welcome and NSO program elements. Continue reviewing the schedule below for more Fall Welcome and NSO program details (i.e. Convocation and the MSU Open House experience). ALL NEW STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE in these program elements and will be engaged in programming during this entire timeframe.

8:30 AM (EDT) CONVOCATION SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES - Breslin Center Concourse - Prior to the start of Convocation, please join the MSU Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) on the concourse of the Breslin Center to engage in a Service Project, learn more about Philanthropy, and how to prepare yourselves for this upcoming voting season! We will have a TShirt giveaway to the first 500 participants! Hosted by CCEL in partnership with MSUVote.

Early arriving students will also have the opportunity to receive giveaways (while supplies last), enter a drawing to win prizes, make a 360 video, engage in a wellbeing informational fair, obtain information about student employment opportunities.

10 - 11 AM  (EDT) FALL CONVOCATION - Breslin Student Events Center and Live Stream via WKAR - ALL NEW FIRST YEAR AND TRANSFER STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED to attend this formal ceremony.

  • Fall Convocation is the formal ceremony that marks the beginning of each academic year welcoming the newest members of the MSU community to our university. Interim President Teresa K. Woodruff, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Thomas D. Jeitschko, and other university leaders representing each of the undergraduate degree-granting colleges will extend greetings to you during the event.

    * PLEASE NOTE THAT BAGS, PURSES, AND BACKPACKS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED IN THE BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER.

First Year Students/New Transfer Students Fall Convocation will be held at 10 AM. Breslin doors will open at 8:30 AM. YOU MUST BE SEATED NO LATER THAN 9:30 AM. Early arriving students will have the opportunity to receive giveaways (while supplies last), enter a drawing to win prizes, make a 360 video, engage in a wellbeing informational fair, obtain information about student employment opportunities and participate in community service and civic projects (hosted by Center for Community Engaged Learning).

11:15 AM – 12 PM (EDT) ACADEMIC SCHOLARS/HONORS COLLEGE GREEN TEAMS MEET-UP ORIENTATION - VariousThe Honors College and Academic Scholars Program are excited to see our new students for Green Teams after Fall Convocation. Join two upper-level mentors and a small group of new students from related majors for required orientation activities; stay tuned to your MSU email in August for your group’s location. Teams are invited to attend lunch together afterward. Hosted by Honors College.

12 PM (EDT) VIRTUAL “SPARTAN LUCK OF THE DRAW” - Student Life Facebook Live - At the top of every hour, students can watch the “Spartan Luck of the Draw” via the MSU Student Life Facebook Live page to win a Spartan prize from the prize spinning wheel. 1 - 4 PM (EDT) JAMES MADISON COLLEGE (JMC) OPEN HOUSE & STUDENT ORGANIZATION FAIR - Visit the JMC Library (332 South Case) for pizza and meet JMC staff who will be on hand to pass out welcome packets and free t-shirts. Stop by Club Spartan and all the third floor classrooms to meet the various JMC affiliated student organizations and find out how to get involved during your first year! Hosted by JMC College, JMC students only.

1 - 5 PM (EDT) CAREER SERVICES NETWORK OPEN HOUSE First Floor, Student Services Building (across from Broad Art Museum) 556 E. Circle Dr. – Sponsored by Keurig Dr Pepper - Come meet our fantastic team, learn about career resources and services, and enjoy A&W Root Beer floats, Vernors soda, and Dr Pepper tasting. Pick up your free copy of the new Career Handbook filled with all the info you need to get started on your career plan. Spin to win prizes and cool giveaways while supplies last!  Looking for a job? 2 – 2:30 PM (EDT) NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION – CAMPUS OPEN HOUSE INTRODUCTIONS – Location varies - Students will receive specific instruction regarding the Campus Open House experience and hear from their Neighborhood Spartan Leaders about general expectations for this "choose your own adventure" activity. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow Spartans, explore campus, identify important MSU resources, continue building your social network, and so much more.

2:30 - 5 PM (EDT) NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION – CAMPUS OPEN HOUSE CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE – Location aries -The Campus Open House is a self-guided exploration of the campus, facilities, services, resources, and offices that will help support student success as they learn to navigate the MSU campus. New students will have the option to “choose their own adventure” by selecting from a variety of engagement opportunities, including connecting with campus resources through a campus wide 'Passport' activity, open attractions and buildings for students to explore, attend interactive student panel Q&A sessions, and participate in sense of belonging activities to help new students interact with their peers and learn more about the MSU community.

5 PM (EST) RESIDENTIAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY (RBC) ORIENTATION & WELCOME DAYS - Various locations in the Broad College of Business Complex - RBC first year students only - Residential Business Community (RBC) Orientation & Welcome Days will be held August 21-24, 2023. These events are open only to first year students admitted into the RBC Fall 2023. Please see your MSU email for additional details. Hosted by MSU Broad College of Business.

6 PM (EDT) COMMUNITY MEETINGS - Your residence hall community - On-campus residents will have a community meeting one night during move-in. Residents moving in on Wednesday or Thursday will meet on Thursday, August 24, at 6 PM. Exact locations will vary per hall and will be shared by the Residence Education team. During this meeting, residents will meet their hall staff, learn more about the hall, and review important policies and procedures. Participation in this MEETING IS REQUIRED.

7 - 10 PM (EDT) FALL FEST-WELCOME CARNIVAL (RECREATIONAL SPORTS AND FITNESS SERVICES) - IM East Building and Fields & IM West Building (rain location inside buildings) - Inflatables, Games and Fun to welcome students back to campus! IM East and IM West will both have the festival! Hosted by IM East and IM West Intramural Facilities.

10 PM – 12 AM (EDT) “SPARTAN NATION LATE NIGHT” – Wharton Center - Wharton Center - Join us for an engaging and fun community engagement activity featuring comedian Christopher Powell (CP comedian) and comedian Mic Larry. Hosted by the Office of Spartan Experiences.
